Welfie co-Founder Dr. Nneka Edwards Recognized by UBS and Hello Alice

San Diego, January 26, 2022: Dr. Nneka Edwards, Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Welfie, has been selected as one of the recipients of The Democratizing the Friends & Family Round grant program by Project Entrepreneur, a program by UBS, in partnership with Hello Alice. The Award, which supports female founders of color building high-growth companies raising venture capital, comes with a $25,000 grant.

Welfie is a black and women led company that is working to raise the health of vulnerable communities by providing whole child health to the schools that need it most, everything from Health Education, to Care Coordination, to the Population Health Insights that school and district leaders need to make informed decisions about programs and spending.

“It is statistically harder for black owners and women to get funding. It’s meaningful that UBS and Hello Alice are stepping up,” said Dr. Nneka Edwards, a pediatrician who has a Masters in Public Health from Harvard. “It is such a boost, particularly now that Welfie is showing such momentum, securing new customers, investors and being asked to support various levels of government with their health and COVID initiatives. To be amongst other founders and investors with shared values and experiences, particularly at this point in our journey, is uplifting and inspiring.”

Welfie is known for “The Welfie”, a “wellness selfie”, a health snapshot that gives students, teachers, and school and community leaders health insights that encourage individual and systemic change leading to better outcomes. Good health leads to a good education which leads to better opportunities, jobs and income – and it all starts with The Welfie.

Welfie exists to bring health equity to those who need it most, especially Black and Brown people, by providing whole child health to vulnerable schools, including Health Education, Care Coordination, and the Health Population insights leaders need to make informed decisions. Welfie’s founders are two black doctors, Doctor Steven Moyo, a hospital internist and Dr. Nneka Edwards, a pediatrician, who tired of seeing people who looked like them die younger and sicker. The founding team is rounded out by Susan McLennan who, with her husband, creates Emmy Award winning content and brand building campaigns, particularly in the children’s space. Welfie has stepped into the fight against COVID by offering culturally sensitive testing, vaccine tracking, contact tracing, along with symptom, testing and modified quarantine tracking.
