Welfie Selected by MassChallenge, Partnered with the HHS’s PandemicX and the City of Boston to Help with COVID Response
San Diego, December 20, 2021: Welfie, a startup founded by two black doctors to get much needed medical care and education to those who need it most, has been selected by the US Federal Government’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to partner on COVID solutions that address inequity through their program, PandemicX. PandemicX combines entrepreneurs and digital tools with the infrastructure and data of the federal government to better understand and eliminate disparities in access and quality of care made worse by COVID-19.
Welfie has also been selected to work with the City of Boston as a Dedicated Advisor, where Welfie will be connected with a great many health and education organizations both across and outside of City Hall. Both programs are part of MassChallenge HealthTech Champions, an initiative of the non-profit organization MassChallenge. The program partners leading teams in corporate innovation, industry knowledge, and government leadership with the most promising and high impact startups in critical areas including HealthTech so they can disrupt the status quo and create sustainable change across the globe.
“We started Welfie to help our most vulnerable better navigate their own health journeys and live healthier, happier lives,” said Dr. Steve Moyo. “COVID has laid bare the deep and system wide disparities that literally cost too many people of color life and limb, and we are excited to be part of the Federal and Boston’s responses to the greatest health emergency in decades.”
MassChallenge empowers bold entrepreneurs who will transform healthcare and financial industries, to transform businesses and economies. This year’s participants represent 42% BIPOC founders and 71% Female founders across 3 countries and 6 states.
Welfie exists to bring health equity to those who need it most, especially Black and Brown people. Welfie’s founders are two black doctors, Doctor Steve Moyo, a hospital internist and Dr. Nneka Edwards, a pediatrician, who grew tired of seeing people who looked like them die younger and sicker. They are joined by Susan McLennan who, with her husband, creates Emmy Award winning content and brand building campaigns, particularly in the children’s space. Welfie has stepped into the fight against COVID by offering culturally sensitive testing, vaccine tracking, contact tracing, along with symptom, testing and modified quarantine tracking.
