Welfie’s Dr. Steven Moyo Wins Startup San Diego’s Pitch Competition
San Diego, October 18, 2021: Dr. Steven Moyo, MD, Founder and CEO of Welfie, has won Startup San Diego’s #SDSM2021 Pitch Competition - Heavyweight Division, presented by San Diego State University in Collaboration with Tech Coast Angels and Connect. Last year, Dr. Moyo was a participant in the SDSM2020 Incubator program, where he was able to further his vision of Welfie.
Welfie, which stands for “Wellness Selfie”, is a self screener and tracker that lets district and school leaders, teachers, and staff better understand the health and wellness of their school communities while promoting learning readiness through whole school health. Welfie is also a health equity platform, bringing health literacy to underserved communities and funneling critical insights back to leaders responsible for developing health and education policies and programs.
Welfie is best known for its COVID Welfie, which is a Covid 19 vaccine tracker, contact tracer, modified quarantine tracker, a symptom tracker and a test tracker helping districts and schools keep kids and teachers safe and in school.

Welfie was founded by two black doctors, Dr. Steven Moyo, a Johns Hopkins-trained Internist and Dr. Nneka Edwards, a Harvard-trained public health focused pediatrician, who grew increasingly frustrated watching people who looked like them die way too young. Welfie primarily serves the underserved and is a movement that is focused on health and education equity. Without good health, a good education is not possible. Without a good education, a good job is unlikely. Without a good job, a good income is unachievable. Welfie is working to eliminate health barriers to education and address social determinants of health.
