School Leaders Help Design COVID-19 Tracker
In its most simple form a COVID-19 Test Tracker is as basic as “was it positive?” or “was it negative”.
But if that is all you are capturing as a community leader. You may not be doing enough to keep your community safe.
Here is why I say this. And it is not my opinion. It is yours. School leaders.
SCHOOL LEADERS HELP DESIGN THEIR OWN COVID-19 TRACKER
Recently we rolled out “Version 1.0” of our COVID-19 Test Tracker. We knew schools would need a way to start tracking COVID-19 test results in staff as well as students as they re-open. Many schools we have talked to are relying on Google Sheets. And in fact, one of our partners has adopted Welfie for their screening but is using Google Sheets for their test tracking. I know because I’ve seen it.
Well, we knew that simply wouldn’t do. So, in Version 1.0, we rolled out a simple way for our users to track test results. It captured who, the result status, an image of their report, the type of test, and even allowed the administration to update the test results themselves.
COVID-19 TEST TRACKER TO TRACK TEST DATES AND TEST DELAYS
But, this is when our school partners at Wellspring Education… well.. schooled us to what else they really needed.
They needed able to track the:
Test Date - the date the test was collected
Result Date - the date the test resulted
Upload a file (pdf) or image
Download an Excel/CSV or PDF
Now, most of this made perfect sense, and some were already planned for Version 2.0 of our tracker. But there was one point that made me curious. As a physician, I puzzled over the value of the “result date” or the date that a test result is reported. The “test date” made sense - from here you can calculate the date of return to campus or the date the individual should next be tested. So…. I did what any product sleuth should do… I asked our customer.
And they answered…. Twice!
There are a host of benefits that our COVID-19 Symptom, Test, and Vaccine Tracker provides. And now there are two more
Easily track and remind staff that are off track
Knowing the test and result date helps to keep an eye on delays and track how long it is tacking for results to get back
This is design thinking at its finest. Working closely with the end-user. Asking questions and understanding pain points. I was instantly inspired and wanted to further ensure I understood and validated how we would opt to solve the problem. I hopped into Figma and created a prototype and demo video.
The response was exactly what we hoped for.
In fact, it was more than what we hoped for… A few days later… we got a nudge from our partners essentially asking us “Hey, where is that update we discussed?” - Although they were much more polite about it. And when a customer is telling you this is “very important”… Act quickly.
So we are doing just that. Version 2.0 of our tracker is being fast-tracked and we hope to have it out by the end of the week.
This is where you come in. We are not at the finish line and your opinion matters.
How can we improve this for Version 2.0 and even 3.0?
We would love to hear your feedback.
