The Psychology of the Anti-mask movement

Now months deep into the COVID-19 Pandemic, there is unfortunately still a great deal of disagreement. There is a deep discord amongst American’s when it comes to the severity and seriousness of the illness and the preventative measures put in place to combat the pandemic. The main target of ire has been masks, which has been discussed ad nauseam. In trying to educate about mask wearing, I often feel like I am running into a brick wall, despite presenting a very succinct and non politically driven factual argument. I know the bulk of these people to be somewhat reasonable on other matters. So what gives? What is the deal with the anti-maskers and conspiracy theorists in general?

In this week’s episode of Welfie’s podcast we break down the psychology behind the anti-mask movement and these conspiracy theories. Today I am  joined by Frank Levandowski who is an emergency department nurse practitioner, and two clinical psychologists; Dr Pamela Moyo, PhD and Dr Christina Moldovan, PhD.

We discuss the statements that support the anti-mask movement, conspiracy theories, and how to go about having a conversation with someone who supports the anti-mask movement without it turning into an argument or battle. How does one approach these conversations? Tune in to find out. Click the link below or follow on spotify, apple or google under Welfie Dot Com.

Ever wonder why people seem to be ignoring the facts behind masks and adamantly refuse to wear them? Curious how you can try to get past the impenetrable barriers they put up in regards to their views? What is the deal with the mainstream spread of these bizarre conspiracy theories?
